In a blog post towards the end of last year, we made a case for ideas. We believe that good ideas are at the heart of good communication no matter how much tech you have, how much money you spend, and even how pretty your pictures are.
That’s the case now, that’s the way it’s always been, and that’s the way it’s going to stay. To drive the point home, we’ve decided to take you back a few decades and show you the stars of yesteryear.
You might have seen this one before. It’s one of the most famous advertisements ever, and it’s from the 1960s.
This ad, by DDB, is still very convincing. The copy is clever, engaging, and it appeals directly to the consumer’s needs and wants. The idea is brilliantly executed: Our inspectors don’t settle for less than the best; they’re on your side.
Avis – #2 In the Industry
Not much aesthetic padding here. It’s just a great idea.
Once again they’ve taken the idea and refined it into a truly stunning bit of work. Being number two pushes Avis harder and further, because number one has a big, scary shadow.
In both cases, the idea is the clincher. Their form is essentially the same as most other ads of the day, but their effect is not. Their effect is the product of a solid and well-thought-out idea.
That’s because a good idea makes waves. All of the best ads out there have good ideas behind them. They always have, and they always will. Check out the ones we’ve showcased here and here. We think you’ll agree.
